Mangrove Lithium, a Vancouver based company, has developed a breakthrough platform for the most cost-effective production of battery grade lithium hydroxide and carbonate from diverse input streams and assets. Mangrove’s modular solution can be scaled to any capacity and co-located with upstream lithium producers or cathode and cell manufacturers. The platform technology is also being commercialized for the conversion of waste brines to chemicals and desalinated water. The company has attracted funding through the Emissions Reduction Alberta, Western Economic Diversification, Sustainable Development Technology Canada and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. The Company has a highly experienced leadership team with a track record of successfully commercializing and deploying industrial technologies and is working towards the deployment of a first-of-a-kind commercial plant in 2022.

 

Position

Mangrove is seeking an exceptional individual to play a key role in their multidisciplinary engineering team. In this hands-on position, the Senior Electrochemist will work with the engineering and management team to develop plant designs based on electrochemical processes with Mangrove’s electrochemical technology at the core. The Senior Electrochemist will have full exposure to design, development, testing, and deployment of new components and complete systems in Mangrove’s plants.

The individual will have a diverse and well-rounded technical and entrepreneurial skill set and a track-record of successfully executing projects in a product development and technology commercialization environment. Required Education, Skills and Experience

  • Masters or PhD. in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science/engineering or related fields with an emphasis in electrochemistry or electrochemical engineering. The ideal candidate will have specific experience in industrial fuel cell, electrolysis, electrodialysis and/or oxygen depolarized chlor-alkali technology.
  • 7 or more years of industrial electrochemical experience.
  • Experience with design, performance characterization and operations of commercial scale electrochemical cells and stacks.
  • Experience in commercial scale manufacturing of membranes, catalyst coated membranes and electrodes.
  • Experience in AC and DC electrochemical testing methods including cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, potentiostatic and galvanostatic testing and durability testing of electrochemical components. Ideal candidate will also be well-versed in Design of Experiments methods.
  • Strong knowledge of electrochemical conversion to various chemicals, electrolytic cells, and electrodialysis components (membranes, electrodes, electrocatalysts, etc.)
  • Excellent critical thinking, analysis, problem solving and communications skills and as well as devising innovative solutions to challenging problems
  • Self-motivated, proactive, flexible and passionate about learning.
  • Strong hands-on capabilities, from designing, building and running bench-top experiments to operating pilot units in the field.
  • Ability to interact with a wide range of scientists and engineers.
